A Veteran Studio Musician Describes How to Not Get Your Butt Kicked by Change

My name is Rudyard Vance (stage name Que Fountaine), a graduate accountant, MBA, and a performing keyboardist in the San Francisco Bay Area.  I am the owner operator of Vance Economic Services, an accounting firm in business for over 30 years.

As most, I have been an artist longer than I have been an accountant.  My first gig was as an opening act for Ike and Tina Turner at the Long Island Club in the heart of the ghetto in San Francisco.  The pay was $25 a night.  For a 12 year old that was good, but changes came to the industry like a cold shower at 4 am.

DJ disco cut musician’s jobs one club at a time until there were no clubs left to perform at.  In San Francisco, Bill Graham, Chet Helms, and others controlled big venues where shows were produced 5 days a week.  Performers had to get on board or they would be left behind with no gigs.  The customers wanted a higher class of performances, original songs, show biz, and glam.  I played in a band trying to find an identity that Bill Graham thought would sell.  It never happened.  I did studio work in real studios, and then the computers came.  You had to know what computers could do to take you to the next level.  If you didn’t you were left behind.

Then came the internet.  Boy, it hurt until we stopped fighting it..........

"Artists must understand both marketing and economics.  It is said Picasso sometimes paid restaurant bills with his scribbling on the tablecloth.  An artist with their free recording on one percent of the world’s iPods would be considered a marketing monster, worth millions, if marketed correctly."

"The standard (OMA DRM 1.0) is developed mainly to solve two problems. Firstly, there is no standardized way of preventing illegal peer-to-peer content delivery that exists on phones without forward-lock." - excerpted from a 2003 DRM white paper

Why are we doing this?  GDRI is an aggressive advocate for creators' and artists' rights in the digital/data age.  We don't just talk about stuff, we actually do stuff.  Stuff like suing the wireless carriers on behalf of creators and artists.  Don't you think it's about time you did something to help GDRI?  Legal strategies and administration costs money.  And so, the question is, do we continue fighting this fight with or without your help?

The solution is for you to
get involved! and/or at least make and register MMS versions of your work.  ASAP!  You may do these things at a whopping 50% discount whenever and wherever you see this;  Fast Trak is ON!

There are many ways to help us get this done.  The highest priority today is to raise money for our legal fund as we back our members in their fight for fair compensation.
